The story of the society

In 1990 the birdwatchers among METU students were an active group under BIOT (Biology Society). With the need of an independent club we established METU Birdwatching Society in 1995. After that the club has grown so much that today it makes up one of the biggest groups of birdwatchers in Turkey.

We have been studying birds of our university campus (METU-Campus) throughout the year. And we have performed many exhibitions & slide show presentations giving interesting information about birds in our environment.

Our aims are to make people more sensitive to nature and birds, to increase the number of birdwatchers, to study the birds of METU campus and of other sites near Ankara. We also try to participate in bird projects of declining species in Turkey. In particular we have started a project in 1998 - the METU birds project - which aims to record the distributions of birds in the campus area.

Story of this page

This page was born in 1996, as a term paper by Okan Can at a temporary address. Later Kerem Ali Boyla has taken up the job and the long lasting page at wasp.bio.metu.edu.tr/~bird/ was built. In fall 99 Selahi took up the job and this is the resulting page (Thanks to Evrim Akman). Updating is in process, thanks to Özge Çelik and Barbaros Demirci .
